The Heating Transformation Book
How we made the complexity of the heating transition tangible and irresistible.
Heating is political, complex, and crucial for Europe’s climate goals. Although the sector is responsible for almost half of Europe’s energy consumption, its necessary decarbonization is often overshadowed by dry debates.
This is where the unique book project, which Heat Pump Watch significantly co-authored, comes in: “The Heating Transition Book” (Subtitle: “Heat Pumps, Renewables & Other Hot Stuff”). True to our motto, “More Than Green,” we found a direct way to convey the technical complexity of the heating transition and win it over with a fascinating side.

The Transformation through Colour: From Facts to Fascination
This project is not a technical manual but a visual compass spanning 68 pages. It combines strong technological and political messages with a playful comic style – because the book is an infographic colouring book.
In just under two years of intensive work, a communication artwork was created that deliberately breaks with conventional policy materials. Brilliant infographics, plenty of facts, figures, and data are presented across 30 thematic double-page spreads – ready to be coloured!
Technical Highlight: The hand-drawn illustrations and the character “Pumpi” help illustrate abstract concepts. Furthermore, a thermosensitive ink on the opening page reveals the inner workings of a heat pump when warmed – a small, technical wonder to touch.
Why the Project Works
What began as a small, enthusiastic idea within our team quickly sparked a wave of excitement. Our vision was to reach target groups – from homeowners to politicians and NGOs – emotionally. The unexpected format appeals to our “inner child” and ensures that complex content like tech myths, urban district solutions, or the functionality of smart heating networks stays in mind:
What does a smart, renewable heating network look like?
What truly lies behind common misconceptions?
What does it mean when entire cities operate without fossil fuels?
We are proud to have contributed our well-founded expert knowledge to the scientific and visual design of this creative and impactful tool.
